The film’s compelling logline reads: “A reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man, and what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
In addition to Dern and Hemsworth, the cast features Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni.
Laura Dern shared insights about the film, highlighting its themes of identity and self-worth within relationships, particularly in the intellectually charged literary scene. She noted the intriguing dynamic between the younger man and the older writer, emphasizing how the story explores connections that go beyond romance.
Director Susannah Grant returns to the helm after her previous feature film, 2006’s Catch and Release. She also co-created and served as showrunner for the acclaimed series Unbelievable, released in 2019.
Grant has an impressive writing portfolio, including classics like Pocahontas, Erin Brockovich (which received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay), and The Soloist.
Producing Lonely Planet alongside Grant are Liza Chasin and Sarah Timberman, with Brendan Ferguson, Corinne Weber, and Margaret Chernin serving as executive producers.
