The Chairman of the Labour Party Caretaker Committee, Nenadi Usman, has refuted claims suggesting she has defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). In a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday, Usman clarified her position amid swirling rumors fueled by a viral video featuring former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
During his visit to the SDP headquarters in Abuja, El-Rufai alleged that the Federal Government was instigating internal conflicts and numerous litigations affecting Nigeria’s opposition parties. Usman’s appearance at the event led to speculation regarding her allegiance to the SDP.
Explaining her presence alongside El-Rufai and SDP leadership, Usman stated, “I was invited by my colleague, the National Chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, to welcome Mallam El-Rufai into the opposition fold at the SDP Secretariat in Abuja. This decision reflects a broader recognition that a healthy democracy requires a robust and credible opposition to hold the government accountable.”
She emphasized that experienced individuals like El-Rufai play a crucial role in strengthening opposition and advancing democratic processes. “A strong opposition ensures that government actions are scrutinized, dissenting voices are heard, and the interests of the people are prioritized,” she added.
Usman reaffirmed her commitment to the Labour Party, emphasizing its dedication to collaborating with opposition parties for good governance. “The Labour Party is steadfast in fostering a vibrant opposition environment where diverse voices can unite for the common good. A united opposition enhances our democratic process,” she concluded, inviting all stakeholders who advocate for justice, fairness, and the welfare of the Nigerian populace to join the cause.
“With collective efforts, we can build an opposition that provides viable alternatives for a better Nigeria. A new Nigeria is attainable,” she stated.
