The VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan has called for a comprehensive national policy to implement prohibition and combat drug abuse during a conference held in Ulundurpet.
Thirumavalavan emphasized that this is not the first instance of the VCK advocating for such measures, recalling a women’s conference in Tiruchi that addressed the issue in 2015. He highlighted that the challenges posed by liquor sales extend beyond Tamil Nadu and are a concern throughout the nation.
During his address, Thirumavalavan noted that the VCK’s call for collaboration with other political parties, including AIADMK, was misunderstood and misrepresented in a political context.
He further asserted the necessity of shutting down liquor stores nationwide, implementing complete prohibition to safeguard the country’s human resources. “Great leaders like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Periyar, and Karl Marx would not have thrived had they been consumed by addictions,” he stated.
Thirumavalavan outlined two longstanding demands from the VCK regarding prohibition: the enforcement of a state-level ban by closing liquor shops and urging the central government to establish a dedicated prohibition law for the country.
He also mentioned a recent discussion with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin about the enforcement of total prohibition in the state.
Thirumavalavan expressed confidence that the DMK could secure a victory in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections if liquor shops were closed in Tamil Nadu.
