The Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, is set to take legal action against her six-month suspension, which followed a confrontation with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, regarding seating arrangements in the Senate.
Her legal counsel, Victor Giwa, condemned the Senate’s decision as a violation of a court order that reportedly restrains further action on the matter. Giwa emphasized that the suspension is null and void, citing a court order that prohibits disciplinary measures until a motion is resolved.
Giwa indicated that they plan to return to court in two weeks to address the Senate’s disregard for the court order, asserting that the suspension is an affront to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights. He highlighted that the senator’s complaint of sexual harassment was not given due consideration before the harsh sanction was imposed.
The Senate issued the suspension, citing violations of its Standing Orders in response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Akpabio, which he has denied. Her complaint has been referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which recommended the suspension following Akpoti-Uduaghan’s absence at an investigative hearing.
The Senate’s decision has sparked widespread criticism from legal authorities, opposition parties, and rights advocates, who argue that the procedure was unjust. The Nigerian Bar Association and others have condemned the lack of an adequate opportunity for the senator to defend herself against the allegations before disciplinary measures were enacted.
In addition, the committee that reviewed the case recommended that Akpoti-Uduaghan could have her suspension reconsidered if she issued a written apology to the Senate President, a proposal the Senate later rejected.
Despite the suspension, her legislative aides will continue to receive their salaries, after a successful motion by a senator against penalizing them for circumstances beyond their control. The Senate commended the committee for its handling of the case but emphasized the need for compliance with Senate rules.
The unfolding saga has raised significant concerns about the treatment of women in politics, with various stakeholders calling for a fair investigation into the allegations against Akpabio. Akpoti-Uduaghan has proclaimed her determination to fight against the suspension, asserting her right to due process and a fair hearing.
As public attention turns toward the Senate’s actions, the case continues to evoke debates about the role of gender in political discourse and the necessity for systematic reforms that safeguard the rights of lawmakers. The upcoming court proceedings will be a crucial test in this contentious political landscape.
