Thailand has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar during the 57th Asean Ministerial Meeting (AMM) held in Vientiane, Laos, from July 23 to 27. Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa emphasized the nation’s readiness to facilitate constructive dialogue among all relevant stakeholders.
In a statement made at the regional meeting, Minister Maris highlighted the importance of integrated efforts and more open discussions as crucial steps to effectively tackle the crisis. He stressed the need for inclusive talks involving key stakeholders, particularly countries sharing borders with Myanmar, as well as special envoys and the Asean Troika.
This collaborative approach would promote a better understanding of each party’s limitations, sensitivities, and expectations, paving the way for concrete solutions, he stated.
Minister Maris pointed out that the Asean community has shown support for Thailand in enhancing its role in resolving the situation. He clarified that while Thailand is committed to facilitating discussions, it has no intention of interfering in Myanmar’s internal affairs, emphasizing that Myanmar must ultimately take charge of resolving its crisis.
During bilateral talks, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi also expressed a willingness to assist in the matter. Minister Maris reiterated Thailand’s support for dialogue that leads to productive and tangible outcomes.
Notably, in a recent BIMSTEC meeting in New Delhi, Thailand proposed a trilateral discussion involving Thailand, India, and Myanmar to address the unrest, with the Indian side welcoming this initiative.
“By bringing various stakeholders to the discussion table, Myanmar would not feel isolated and would recognize the impact their situation has on neighboring countries,” Minister Maris concluded, expressing optimism that these dialogues would contribute to finding the best possible solutions.
