The former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), expressed his enthusiasm regarding the crucial role his administration played in Nigeria’s 26-year journey of uninterrupted democracy.
During the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) public launch of its book, “100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria (1923 – 2023),” held in Abuja, Abdulsalami urged Nigerians to prioritize the continued success of democracy.
As the event’s Chairman, he spoke on the theme, “100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria – The Imperative of Nigeria’s Political Stability: Issues and Solutions.” Abdulsalami, represented by his Chief Security Officer, General Abdulrashid Aliyu, highlighted that 2025 will mark 102 years since the establishment of political parties in Nigeria, signifying a pivotal moment in the nation’s democratic evolution.
He commended the leadership of IPAC for their foresight in producing this historic account of Nigeria’s political landscape over the past century. Abdulsalami noted, "Despite military interventions, democracy has established its roots in Nigeria. There is no alternative to governance by the people, for the people, which is the essence of democracy."
This year also marks 26 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria, the longest period of constitutional governance since gaining independence on October 1, 1960. Abdulsalami remarked, "My administration laid a solid foundation for democratic governance, demonstrating that when leaders are dedicated to building strong democratic institutions, democracy can thrive and deliver its benefits to citizens."
He stressed the importance of nurturing and fortifying democracy, advocating that civilian rule must be safeguarded. Abdulsalami asserted that Nigeria’s democracy has overcome numerous challenges, reflecting the citizens’ unwavering faith and resilience in representative governance.
"It is crucial to explore political parties’ development priorities to strengthen democracy and create a conducive environment for successful elections and political stability, aligning with IPAC’s mandate," he said.
Abdulsalami emphasized the lessons learned during this lengthy democratic period, stating that ongoing amendments to the Constitution and Electoral Act aim to address flaws in the electoral process while embedding democratic ideals and values to foster sustainable democracy and development.
He underscored the importance of party leadership supremacy, adherence to party manifestoes, and issue-based ideology in formation and membership of political parties.
Earlier, the National Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Dantalle, highlighted the significance of the book launch, which commemorates a century of political party activities in Nigeria.
