In a significant development, Munirathna, the BJP MLA from R.R. Nagar, has been remanded to the custody of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a duration of 12 days, with the custody extending until October 5.
The SIT had filed a petition with the Special Court of Magistrate for criminal cases involving former and current MPs and MLAs to secure his custody, leading to a hearing on Tuesday after an initial adjournment the previous day.
Upon hearing the case, the court granted the SIT permission for a 12-day police custody. SIT officials have taken Munirathna from Central Prison to the CID office, the operational hub of the SIT.
Munirathna faces three separate legal cases, and the ongoing SIT investigation has been prompted by escalating worries regarding witness intimidation and potential evidence destruction.
Furthermore, an FIR was registered against one of Munirathna’s close associates for allegedly threatening a witness linked to a rape case. This incident has also been handed over to the SIT for investigation. In addition, M. Velu Nayakar, a complainant in a caste abuse case, has reported to the Chief Minister that supporters of the MLA have issued threats against him for challenging Munirathna.
