Mpox Outbreak Report: Cases Surge Across Nigeria
Mpox has now been reported in 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory, affecting a total of 63 local government areas throughout the country, according to the latest Mpox situation report released by health authorities.
Between January 1 and October 6, 2024, there have been 94 confirmed cases out of 1,297 suspected cases. The report highlighted 47 new suspected cases reported in Epidemiology week 40, 2024, marking a decline from 67 cases in week 39.
Additionally, there were six confirmed cases reported in week 40, which is a decrease from the ten confirmed cases documented in week 39.
The report further specifies that since September 2017, there have been 5,114 suspected cases reported across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with 1,180 confirming a rate of 23.1%. The majority of those affected are males, constituting approximately 70% of confirmed cases.
The National Mpox multi-sectoral and multi-partner Emergency Operation Centre is actively coordinating the response to the outbreak.
Regarding confirmed cases, the states reporting include: Cross River (11), Lagos (10), Plateau (8), Enugu (8), Akwa Ibom (8), Delta (6), Bayelsa (6), FCT (5), Imo (4), Benue (4), Rivers (3), and Abia (3).
Ogun State currently leads in suspected cases with 222, followed by Lagos (153), Bayelsa (125), and Cross River (84). The situation remains dynamic, as other states also report significant numbers of suspected cases.
The age distribution of confirmed cases in 2024 indicates that children aged 0-10 account for 24 cases, while other age groups show varying numbers: 11-20 years (15 cases), 21-30 years (25 cases), 31-40 years (14 cases), 41-50 years (12 cases), and those aged 50 and above (4 cases).
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the well-being of the public and to implement necessary health measures.
