The 45th Chess Olympiad, a prestigious international team chess competition, is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from September 10 to 23, 2024. This marks the first time Hungary has hosted the Chess Olympiad since the city held the 2nd unofficial Olympiad in 1926.
A remarkable 197 teams from 195 countries are participating in the open category, and 183 teams from 181 countries are competing in the women’s category. Notably, Mongolia has sent both men’s and women’s teams to this global event.
Team Composition of Mongolia:
The men’s team features IM G. Amartuvshin, FM S. Chinguun, FM E. Baasansuren, IM M. Amilal, and FM Kh. Itgelt. The women’s team consists of WGM T. Munkhzul, IM B. Munguntuul, IM D. Nomin-Erdene, WFM E. Khuslen, and WCM B. Mungunzul.
Currently, the Mongolian men’s team is ranked 53rd. They kicked off the tournament with a resounding 4-0 victory over Mauritius. However, they faced tough competition, ending the second and third rounds in 2-2 ties against teams from the Czech Republic and Israel. In the fourth round, they secured a victory against Germany, followed by another 4-0 win against Sudan. Their next match will be against the Bulgarian team.
The Mongolian women’s team is performing exceptionally well, ranking 3rd without a single loss. They have faced off against teams from Guatemala, Monaco, Peru, Spain, and the United States, notably defeating the strong US team, creating a remarkable upset. Their upcoming challenge will be against the Georgian team.
