Formula 1 has announced a significant change for the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix, aiming to enhance racing dynamics by increasing the number of mandatory pit stops. This decision comes in response to recent observations of limited overtaking opportunities, which have rendered the prestigious race more processional due to the narrow circuit and larger car sizes.
The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix witnessed the top 10 drivers starting and finishing in the same positions, largely influenced by a red flag incident on the opening lap that hindered strategic racing. Under existing regulations, each driver must utilize at least two dry tyre compounds during dry conditions, necessitating at least one pit stop unless interrupted by a red flag allowing for tyre changes.
Following a new agreement, the Monaco Grand Prix will remain on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2031. In a recent commission meeting held in London, the FIA stated, “With the aim of promoting better racing at the Monaco Grand Prix, the commission discussed proposals for Monaco-specific regulations.” It was confirmed that the number of mandatory pit stops would be increased, with further discussions scheduled by the Sporting Advisory Committee in the coming weeks.
In other significant updates from the F1 Commission, new deflection tests for front wings will be implemented to address concerns regarding teams exploiting wing flexing. These tests are set to commence from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards. Furthermore, the FIA has lifted limits on the number of gearboxes that can be used and clarified start procedures following issues experienced during last year’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
The racing community awaits these anticipated changes to enhance the excitement and competitiveness of the Monaco Grand Prix and beyond.
