HYDERABAD
The Telangana Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies, N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, has ordered immediate action to repair a significant breach in the Nagarjunasagar Left Canal (Lal Bahadur Canal) that occurred on Sunday morning near Kagitha Ramachandrapuram village in Suryapet district.
Accompanied by local MLA N. Padmavathi Reddy and senior engineers, Reddy assessed the damage site on Monday. Responding swiftly, project engineers had closed the head regulator of the Left Canal by 9 a.m. to prevent further water wastage after the breach.
Preliminary estimates indicate that approximately 300 acres of standing crops, predominantly paddy, suffered damage due to flooding from the canal. Minister Reddy highlighted the quick closure of the canal head, which helped avert more extensive flooding in the village.
He noted that Huzurnagar and Kodad constituencies experienced severe flooding due to unprecedented rainfall levels, the highest in fifty years. The government plans to conduct a detailed assessment of crop losses in the coming days to support affected farmers.
In a separate incident, Reddy inspected the Ramapuram bridge on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway that was washed away, disrupting critical connectivity between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He directed national highway authorities to prioritize restoring the washed-away road link.
Suryapet District Collector Tajas Nandlal Pawar and Superintendent of Police Sunpreeet Singh accompanied the minister during his visit to the impacted area.
