Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian has addressed the controversy surrounding the ganja case involving Kayamkulam MLA U. Prathibha’s son, downplaying the significance of the incident.
While speaking at a martyrdom day program in Kayamkulam, Minister Cherian remarked that students often socialize and may engage in smoking. “Ms. Prathibha’s son is currently enrolled in a polytechnic. I reviewed the First Information Report, which indicates he was observed smoking. I, too, smoke occasionally. Even noted figures have been known to indulge in such habits. There is no justification for registering a non-bailable case for smoking,” he stated.
He acknowledged that smoking is unhealthy but emphasized that it does not constitute a serious crime. “If he smoked, it is indeed wrong, but we must question the severity of the charges. He was merely with friends, and Ms. Prathibha is facing undue scrutiny. She is one of the most esteemed MLAs in Kerala, which is why she was nominated by the CPI (M),” he added.
Following his earlier comments, Minister Cherian clarified to the media that his intention was not to convey a misleading message. He argued that while mistakes made by young people should be addressed, proper guidance should be given. “A small quantity of ganja was seized from an individual in the group, not from Ms. Prathibha’s son. However, a case was filed against all members present. It would have been more suitable to counsel the children and their parents. This situation appears to be orchestrated against Ms. Prathibha, with an ulterior motive to undermine the CPI (M),” he expressed.
Recently, the Excise department arrested nine individuals, including the son of Ms. Prathibha, who were found with three grams of ganja in Thakazhi on December 28. It was noted that the ganja was collected from another member of the group, prompting the release of all nine on bail due to the minor amount involved. Subsequently, Ms. Prathibha denied any wrongdoing by her son, asserting that no contraband was discovered and accusing the media of unfairly targeting her family.
