Michael van Gerwen delivered an impressive performance at Players Championship 21, defeating Dave Chisnall with an 8-4 scoreline to claim his first ranking title of 2024 in Wigan. The Dutch superstar averaged close to 107 during the match, showcasing his dominance on the oche.
Meanwhile, Luke Littler’s attempt to secure back-to-back titles came to an abrupt end as Maik Kuivenhoven triumphed over him with a surprising 6-3 victory in the last 16, breaking Littler’s remarkable unbeaten streak for the year.
“I always believe in my own ability,” Van Gerwen stated after the victory. “I’m pleased with my performance and the new darts I’ve been using. Although I’ve struggled at these events recently, to win again feels great. There is much more to fight for in the future.”
The next significant event on the darting calendar is the 2024 BoyleSports World Grand Prix, set to take place at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester from October 7-13. This prestigious tournament, featuring a prize pool of £600,000, will showcase 32 of the world’s top players competing for the championship title.
Luke Humphries, the reigning champion who secured his first TV ranking title against Gerwyn Price last year, will return to defend his title. Fans can also expect to see six-time champion Michael van Gerwen and rising star Luke Littler, who is set to make his double-start debut in the East Midlands.
In a new format for this year’s competition, the semi-finals on October 12 will be played over the best of nine sets, while the final will be contested over the best of 11 sets on Sunday, October 13.
