MIAMI — Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava secured a decisive reelection victory on Tuesday, garnering nearly 60% of the vote and avoiding a runoff among her six opponents.
Levine Cava, a Democrat, made history as the first female mayor of Florida’s most populous county when she assumed office in 2020. Her opponents included prominent figures such as the mayors of Miami Lakes and Surfside.
In her victory statement, Levine Cava expressed her commitment to continuing essential work for the county. “I am ready and promise to continue doing the work that needs to get done. We will double down on our housing challenges, invest in our infrastructure to be future-ready, prioritize healthy and safe communities, and ensure we are a resilient community that preserves and protects our environment.”
Had Levine Cava received less than 50% of the vote, a runoff between the leading candidates would have been necessary.
Prior to her mayoral tenure, Levine Cava was a Miami-Dade County commissioner and held various social and legal roles. Her leadership gained national attention following the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers condominium building in Surfside in June 2021, which resulted in the deaths of 98 people.
