In a significant update, Meta is changing its Facebook Live video storage policy, now limiting the accessibility of live broadcasts to just 30 days before automatic deletion. This new policy, effective February 19, is designed to align Facebook’s storage practices with industry standards and enhance the management of live video content on the platform.
30-Day Accessibility for Live Videos
The revised policy stipulates that live broadcast videos can be replayed, downloaded, or shared for a period of 30 days post-broadcast, after which they will be automatically deleted. This marks a shift from the previous policy that allowed indefinite storage of live videos.
Furthermore, live videos that are older than 30 days will be phased out over the next few months. Users will receive advance notifications before deletion, granting them 90 days to download, transfer, or repurpose their content. Notifications will be sent both via email and through the app.
Options for Downloading and Transferring Live Videos
To help users retain their content, several new tools have been introduced for downloading or transferring live videos prior to their removal.
Single Video Download:
- Access the Videos tab on your profile or page.
- Identify the live video you wish to download.
- Open the video in full-screen mode, click […], and select “Download video.”
- Multiple videos can also be downloaded through the Activity Log by selecting “Your live videos” and defining a date range.
Bulk Video Download:
- Users can choose several live videos for simultaneous download.
- You will be led to the download interface, where you can select a destination for the saved files.
Transferring Live Videos:
- Live videos can be directly transferred to cloud storage options.
- In the download interface, select “Transfer live videos” and choose a preferred storage option.
Convert Live Videos to Reels
For those looking to preserve moments from past live broadcasts beyond the 30-day limit, a new feature enables users to clip and convert live videos into Reels, allowing them to share key highlights on their profiles.
Postponing Deletion for Extended Time
Users requiring additional time to manage archived live videos can postpone deletion for up to six months. To defer deletion:
- Open the deletion notification.
- Choose “Learn more” and tap “Postpone deletion.”
- Confirm your choice by tapping “Postpone.”
