ECNETNews, Fort-de-France, Martinique, September 18, 2024: In a call for urgent dialogue, Mayor Didier Laguerre of Fort-de-France is responding to the rise of urban violence that has gripped sections of the city. During a press conference today, he voiced serious concern over the unrest, insisting that immediate actions must be taken that prioritize the welfare of Martinicans.
Severe violence has particularly impacted the neighborhoods of Sainte-Thérèse and Dillon, with reports of clashes, vandalism, and significant damage. Fort-de-France and the nearby area of Le Lamentin witnessed violent encounters, break-ins, and arson overnight, as masked individuals clashed with law enforcement. In Sainte-Thérèse, fires erupted near a local church, and a McDonald’s in Dillon suffered extensive damage, necessitating rapid intervention from firefighters early Wednesday morning.
This unrest is believed to have originated from a peaceful protest on September 11th at Carrefour Dillon that escalated into violence following a law enforcement crackdown. A local activist organization condemned what they termed “police repression,” urging authorities to cease the violence and engage in dialogue.
In an open letter, the organization highlighted the disproportionate response against peaceful protesters, including children and the elderly, calling for public negotiations and alignment of prices with those in mainland France. A representative acknowledged the challenges of managing the rising anger within the community even as they strive for a peaceful resolution.
The unrest has resulted in widespread looting across Fort-de-France and Le Lamentin, with numerous businesses, including Cash Converters, experiencing break-ins. Authorities reported that multiple police officers sustained injuries due to gunfire during the recent protests, further underlining the tensions on the island.
As the situation evolves, Mayor Laguerre continues to advocate for calm, highlighting the urgent need for constructive dialogue to address the crisis. He asserted, “Prompt action is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in Martinique.”
