Mayawati, the president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), has voiced strong support for the Union government’s proposed Bill to implement simultaneous elections. Speaking during a press conference in Lucknow, she emphasized that this initiative would reduce government spending and allow public welfare initiatives to progress without interruption. “Other political parties must rally behind this cause,” she stated.
The seasoned politician and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh criticized the Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) for their previous opposition to reservations in promotions for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) era. “It is better for these parties to stay silent on this matter in Parliament, particularly given their historical position regarding the Constitutional Amendment Bill on reservations,” she asserted.
In response to discussions in the Lok Sabha regarding the Constitution’s 75th anniversary, Mayawati remarked that it is not the Constitution that has failed, but rather the political leaders governing the country. She accused them of failing to uphold its principles due to their “casteist politics and narrow thinking.” Additionally, she expressed skepticism about the BJP’s resolutions, suggesting they won’t benefit the populace. The BSP leader reiterated the necessity of including reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard against alterations.
Furthermore, Mayawati criticized the ruling BJP for allegedly distracting the public from critical issues like poverty and unemployment by employing divisive tactics akin to those used by previous Congress administrations. “The BJP tends to forget its pledges once in power, leaving crucial issues unresolved,” she declared.
