Matt Kuchar Leads Wyndham Championship After Solid Second Round
Matt Kuchar posted an impressive second consecutive round of 64, taking a narrow one-shot lead at the weather-affected Wyndham Championship and keeping his hopes for the FedExCup Playoffs alive.
Kuchar, who has qualified for every FedExCup Playoffs since their inception in 2007, is striving for a win this week at Sedgefield Country Club to extend his continuation on the PGA Tour. The 46-year-old golfer achieved six birdies in a flawless round, bringing his total to 12 under, thus setting the clubhouse lead. His closest competitors are American players Max Greyserman, Cameron Young, and Chad Ramey.
“I think the expectations are high,” Kuchar stated. “I continue to expect to play good golf every week, and while it hasn’t always happened that way, it’s nice to see things rounding into form. I hope it’s not too late.”
Greyserman launched a remarkable challenge for a ’59’ round, opening with five consecutive birdies and finishing with a second bogey-free round. Despite rolling in a long putt at the 17th hole, he fell short of closing out with a birdie for a sub-60 round.
Young’s eventful round of 62 included two eagles on par fives, albeit a double-bogey at the par-three 12th. Coincidentally, defending champion Lucas Glover and rookie Joe Highsmith each scored holes-in-one on Saturday at the same hole. Ramey, who matched Kuchar’s 64, is also among the tied-second players.
England’s Aaron Rai, alongside Billy Horschel and overnight leader Beau Hossler, trails by just one shot. Currently, 20 players remain to complete their second rounds due to interruptions from Tropical Storm Debby, which caused significant delays on Thursday and Friday.
“My record here has been really good over the last six or seven years, and I knew this course has been fairly kind to me,” Horschel commented. “As long as I didn’t get too far ahead of myself with expectations, I thought I’d have a chance to contend again.”
Only the top 70 players in the season-long standings at the end of the tournament will advance to the FedExCup Playoffs.
The second round is set to resume at 6:45 a.m. local time, with the third round to follow, played in threesomes starting from two tees to expedite play.
