Warrington Wolves’ Matt Dufty has stated that the pressure lies with the “favourites,” Hull KR, as both teams gear up for the highly anticipated Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium this Saturday.
Warrington has experienced a rollercoaster season in the Super League, holding a record of six wins and seven losses, positioning them eighth in the standings. In contrast, Hull KR is thriving at the top with only one loss, amassing 22 points.
While many may view Hull KR’s strong form as an advantage heading into the final, Dufty believes it creates an opportunity for Warrington to enjoy a “pressure-free” game, allowing them to play with less restraint.
Last year, Warrington faced disappointment in the 2024 Challenge Cup final, suffering an 18-8 defeat to Wigan Warriors. Many at the club acknowledged the weight of expectation affected their performance. This time, the Wolves aim to approach the match differently.
“Last year had a different feel; we built ourselves up for Wembley but this year is unique. We’ve faced numerous injuries and our league performance hasn’t been strong, yet our Challenge Cup form has been solid,” Dufty remarked. He emphasized that they must focus on enjoying the game and not adding pressure to themselves, stating, “The pressure’s on the other team.”
Warrington last lifted the Challenge Cup trophy in 2019, while Hull KR is seeking their first piece of silverware since 1985. Both teams understand the significance of this match, as it represents a cherished opportunity for players who have yet to experience such a triumph.
Dufty reflected, “This is always our year, hopefully for the fans of Warrington.” The atmosphere at Wembley is likely to be electric, and Dufty intends to honor both the team’s supporters and their hometown.
As the Super League season takes a pause for the Betfred Challenge Cup finals, fans are eager to see how the match unfolds. Warrington Wolves will face Hull KR this Saturday at 3 PM, preceded by the women’s Challenge Cup final featuring St Helens women against Wigan Warriors women at 11:45 AM.
The Super League resumes with Week 14 on Friday, June 13, with Hull KR hosting Catalans Dragons and Hull FC facing Castleford Tigers at 8 PM.
