Marvel’s upcoming film “Thunderbolts” is set to make a significant impact at the summer box office in 2025. The highly anticipated project recently showcased its first footage during a Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, hinting at a dynamic storyline that may mirror the ensemble nature of the “Suicide Squad.”
The exclusive clips opened with Florence Pugh’s character, Yelena Belova, in an emotional reunion with her surrogate father, Alexei Shostakov, also known as the Red Guardian, portrayed by David Harbour. The scene portrays Alexei in a disheveled apartment, while Yelena reveals her struggles with feelings of emptiness, questioning, “there is something wrong with me.” Viewers also caught a glimpse of Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, who is seen grappling with his past as he reads to his child.
In a thrilling twist, Yelena teams up with Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, only to find themselves ensnared in a dangerous trap, leading them to suspect an unseen assassin. A tense moment also features Bucky Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, surveilling Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, before revealing aspects of his life at home.
The footage concluded with electrifying action sequences showcasing the team and an amusing moment featuring Harbour, who made a comedic entrance dressed as the Red Guardian, expressing mock disappointment that his fellow cast members were not in costume. Joining him on stage were Pugh, Louis-Dreyfus, John-Kamen, Russell, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Lewis Pullman.
While details about the film remain under wraps, Pugh remarked on the intriguing dynamic of the Thunderbolts, emphasizing their lack of camaraderie. John-Kamen expressed excitement about reprising her role and alluded to the changes her character, Ghost, has undergone since last appearing.
“Thunderbolts” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2025, further exciting fans as Marvel’s Comic-Con panel also revealed Giancarlo Esposito’s role in “Captain America: Brave New World,” along with intriguing connections to “Eternals.”
