Crystal Palace is preparing to reject a fourth bid from Newcastle for defender Marc Guehi, with reports indicating an offer in the ballpark of his £65 million valuation.
Newcastle’s latest proposal included add-ons, but the deal structure was not approved by Palace. Currently, the record transfer for the Magpies is £63 million for Alexander Isak. Following the rejection of their third attempt, which was worth £55 million up front plus £5 million in add-ons, negotiations have continued.
The England international has emerged as a top target for Newcastle’s manager, Eddie Howe. In a recent statement, Palace chairman Steve Parish emphasized that Newcastle would need to pay “superstar money” to secure the 24-year-old defender, asserting that Guehi is indeed a “generational talent” that the club is committed to keeping ahead of the transfer deadline on August 30.
In a media session, Howe acknowledged the challenge of not settling for just any player, focusing instead on securing difference-makers who can enhance the team’s prospects this season. He expressed his willingness to work through the intricacies of transfer dealings.
Guehi, unaffected by the ongoing transfer speculation, reiterated his commitment to Crystal Palace and his anticipation for the opening Premier League game against Brentford. He stated that his priority remains the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of staying focused on the season ahead.
Regarding Parish’s remarks about him being a “superstar,” Guehi expressed gratitude, noting the significance of such recognition from a pivotal figure within the club. The negotiation dynamics are influenced by Guehi’s contract status, as he is 18 months away from being able to discuss pre-contracts with overseas clubs and two years from potentially leaving on a free transfer.
Despite the swirling rumors, Guehi conveyed his satisfaction at Crystal Palace, highlighting the strong culture of unity and support among the staff, players, and fans. He described the club as an “amazing place to be,” reflecting a positive outlook as the new season approaches.
