The legacy of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh continues to resonate in Visakhapatnam, where he played a significant role in pivotal projects, including the expansion of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). His visit on May 20, 2006, marked a festive occasion, as he laid the foundation stone to increase the plant’s capacity from 3 million tonnes to 6.3 million tonnes and presented the PM’s trophy for ‘Best Integrated Steel Plant’ to VSP’s Chairman and Managing Director.
His contributions extended beyond VSP; he was a key figure in the enhancement of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the merger of Hindustan Shipyard Limited with the Defence sector during challenging times. Singh’s initiatives also included the establishment of the Naval Alternate Operating Base (NAOB) in Visakhapatnam and the inauguration of the Gangavaram Port.
In January 2008, during the five-day Indian Science Congress at Andhra University, Singh unveiled the INSPIRE scheme aimed at nurturing scientific talent in India. His legacy further includes the launch of INS Arihant, India’s first nuclear-powered submarine, on July 26, 2009, a momentous event commemorated on the anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Following the recent passing of Dr. Singh, leaders from various political factions and sectors gathered to pay their respects. Tributes were led by prominent figures including YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana, who honored his memory, alongside other local leaders who expressed deep condolences for the former Prime Minister’s impactful life and career.
