Manipur’s Chief Secretary Prakash Kumar Singh has issued a urgent call for the surrender of unauthorized weapons within a week, emphasizing the need for immediate compliance to restore stability in the region. He deemed the surrender of these arms as “the first and foremost step” towards achieving peace.
Singh set a firm deadline for the surrender of illegal weapons, stating that security forces will take decisive action to reclaim all looted arms after the seven-day period expires. “The seven days are enough. If they can surrender, they can do it in one day,” he asserted, highlighting the importance of cooperation.
His statements were made during an event in Imphal East district, where bicycles and looms were distributed to internally displaced persons. Singh reiterated that failure to return weapons voluntarily would compel security forces to recover them through operations.
Addressing concerns about security, Singh pointed out that weapons in unauthorized hands pose significant threats. He acknowledged the need for increased security along National Highways, stating that steps will be taken soon to enhance force deployment, although he did not provide specific details on the timeline for additional forces.
These remarks come amid ongoing President’s rule in Manipur, which has followed months of escalating tensions between the Meitei community and Kuki-Zo groups. The violence, which erupted in May 2023, has resulted in over 250 fatalities and displaced thousands, underscoring the urgent need for restorative measures in the state.
