WENATCHEE, Washington — A tragic BASE jumping incident in Washington state has resulted in the death of a 47-year-old man after his parachute failed to fully open and he struck a cliff.
According to the Chelan County Sheriff’s office, the accident occurred on Sunday morning in central Washington, where the man, a resident of Entiat, was engaged in the extreme sport.
BASE jumping involves parachuting from fixed objects like cliffs, bridges, and buildings, and is known for its inherent risks.
Reports indicate that the victim experienced a parachute malfunction during his jump, leading to a spin and collision with a rock wall. He fell approximately 650 feet (200 meters) and sustained fatal injuries, being pronounced dead at the scene.
This incident follows a similar tragedy last year at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, where a man lost his life during a high-risk BASE jump from Yavapai Point.
