The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended a suspect, Onu Simeon, following a fatal incident involving one Ifeanyi Chukwu at the Utako Market in Abuja.
The tragedy unfolded on February 5, 2025, around 9:30 a.m., when police received an urgent call reporting a fight at the market. Upon arrival, officers found Chukwu unconscious and immediately transported him to NNPC Hospital in Utako, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.
A police statement revealed the nature of the altercation. “On February 5, 2025, at about 09:30 AM, the Command received a distress call regarding a fight in Utako Market. Police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, where Ifeanyi Chukwu was found lying unconscious on the ground,” it stated.
Initial investigations indicated that the conflict arose between Simeon, a resident of Anguwan Biggy in Jabi Daki Biyu, and Chukwu, who lived in Kuchigoro, Lugbe, over a disputed display area for their goods. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in Chukwu collapsing.
“The disagreement turned into a physical fight, during which Ifeanyi Chukwu unexpectedly collapsed and lost consciousness. His body has been taken to a general hospital for further examination, while the suspect, Onu Simeon, remains in police custody as investigations proceed. More updates will follow,” the statement concluded.
In response to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, urged community members to resolve conflicts amicably, emphasizing that violence often leads to tragic outcomes.
