Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City anticipates receiving the verdict regarding their 115 charges of alleged financial rule violations in the Premier League “within one month.” The potential consequences could include a points deduction or, in extreme cases, expulsion from the league.
During a recent press conference, Guardiola addressed speculation that the club’s substantial January spending was a strategic move in light of a possible transfer ban. City made significant investments in the winter transfer window, totaling £170 million on players such as Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Nico Gonzalez, marking their first substantial transfer activity since 2018.
Guardiola defended the club’s spending, arguing that it has been mischaracterized due to the wealth of its ownership. He highlighted that in the last five years, Manchester City has had the lowest net spend among the top six teams, even after their recent investments.
He stated, “I do not agree with the narrative that our success is solely based on financial power. We have sold many players in recent seasons, and even with our current spending, we remain behind Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Liverpool in terms of net expenditure.”
Looking ahead, Guardiola expressed confidence that a verdict will be announced soon, which he believes will clarify the situation. He emphasized the importance of respecting all clubs, regardless of financial status.
In February 2023, the Premier League charged City with violating over 100 financial regulations from 2009 to 2018, a claim the club has categorically denied. The independent commission held a hearing spanning 12 weeks from September to December, and a decision is expected in the spring, likely around March. Both parties will have the right to appeal, prolonging the resolution process.
