NEW YORK — A man has been charged with assault and menacing after allegedly attacking two individuals at Manhattan’s Grand Central subway station, according to police reports. The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday, leaving a 42-year-old man with a wrist injury and a 26-year-old woman suffering from a neck wound.
Following the attack, authorities took the suspect into custody on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment, harassment, disorderly conduct, and weapons possession. Both victims are currently reported to be in stable condition at a local hospital.
Concerns surrounding subway safety have intensified following this incident and a recent attack where a woman was fatally set on fire in a subway car this past Sunday. Mayor Eric Adams addressed the media, highlighting the assailant’s history of mental illness.
Witnesses report that the woman attacked had just exited the No. 4 train when she was violently confronted. She described being punched to the ground as her attacker yelled aggressive phrases before using a knife on her.
This incident follows closely behind the arraignment of a suspect charged with the murder of the woman who was set ablaze. The accused, 33-year-old Sebastian Zapeta, who is believed to have entered the U.S. illegally, appeared in Brooklyn criminal court but did not enter a plea. He is scheduled to return to court on Friday, with no bail request made by his legal team to date.
As New Yorkers grapple with rising crime rates in public transit systems, this latest attack serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures.
