Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, on his successful campaign in the recent Edo State gubernatorial election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission confirmed Okpebholo’s victory over his key competitors, Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party. The APC candidate secured 291,667 votes, surpassing Ighodalo, who received 247,274 votes, while Akpata trailed with 22,763 votes.
In a statement released by his media adviser, Sanwo-Olu celebrated this outcome as a “landslide victory” for the APC and a clear demonstration of the party’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He praised the people of Edo State for their decisive move away from the PDP, highlighting that their choice represented a strong message of intent. “I congratulate Edo State APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for emerging victorious in Saturday’s gubernatorial election,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “The landslide victory shows that Edo people recognize what is right and have acted accordingly by voting for the APC.”
Sanwo-Olu also urged the Governor-elect to serve all citizens of Edo State fairly, irrespective of their political or social affiliations, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity: “Make this victory count for all Edo people.”
He expressed confidence that the new APC administration in Edo would not only meet but exceed the expectations of the electorate, signaling a “breath of fresh air” for the state. Furthermore, Sanwo-Olu commended the efforts of President Bola Tinubu in ensuring a fair electoral process, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission for their role in conducting a transparent election.
In appreciation, Sanwo-Olu recognized the contributions of key APC leadership, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside the National Campaign Council led by Governor Bassey Ottu, for their pivotal roles in achieving this victory in Edo.
