Matt Bloomfield has officially been appointed as the new manager of Luton Town, leaving behind his role at Wycombe Wanderers, where he played a key part in their promotion ambitions. Joining the Championship side on a three-and-a-half-year contract, Bloomfield departs Wycombe with the team positioned second in League One, just two points shy of leaders Birmingham City.
The 40-year-old successor to Rob Edwards, who parted ways with Luton last week after two years as manager, inherits a club that is currently two points above the relegation zone in the Championship. Edwards led Luton to the Premier League in 2023 but faced challenges in retaining top-flight status, with just seven wins from 26 matches this season.
Luton confirmed that they have met all compensation requirements to secure Bloomfield’s services, along with his assistant Richard Thomas, first-team coach Lee Harrison, and senior analyst Ben Cirne. Bloomfield is set to make his managerial debut in Saturday’s home fixture against Preston North End.
In his statement, Bloomfield expressed his pride in taking on the managerial role, stating, “It’s a genuine honour and a privilege to be here. The desire from the recruitment team and board for me to join has made me feel incredibly proud and welcomed.”
The former midfielder, who made over 500 appearances for Wycombe over a 19-year period, transitioned to management in February 2023 after a stint at Colchester. Under his leadership at Wycombe, Bloomfield secured 87 points during the 2024 season, showcasing an attacking style of play that resonated with fans.
Luton CEO Gary Sweet welcomed Bloomfield, saying, “We are excited to announce Matt’s appointment, and we appreciate Wycombe’s cooperation in this process. His work at Wycombe has been impressive, particularly in leading them towards the top of League One through attractive football.”
As Luton Town moves forward under Bloomfield’s leadership, fans are eager to see how his approach will reinvigorate the team’s performance in the Championship.
