ECNETNews recently engaged with skincare star Luis Gerardo Méndez, who shared insights about his latest film directed by Austin Peters, now exclusively in theaters. Méndez delves into his character’s journey, his collaboration with Elizabeth Banks, and the film’s thrilling narrative.
The movie’s synopsis reveals that aesthetician Hope Goldman (played by Banks) is poised to elevate her career with a new skincare line. However, her life takes a turn when rival facialist Angel Vergara (Méndez) opens a competing boutique nearby, leading her to suspect sabotage aimed at her reputation and business. Joined by her friend Jordan (Lewis Pullman), Hope embarks on a quest to uncover the truth behind the chaos disrupting her life.
In discussing his preparation for the role in Skincare, Méndez shared: “My knowledge of the skincare world was somewhat limited but enriched over the years through conversations with friends in the industry. The film focuses on how characters present themselves to the world while revealing underlying struggles. My character, while successful and technologically advanced in skincare, grapples with feelings of inadequacy and unfulfilled dreams, embodying the pressures of living in Los Angeles.”
He further expressed appreciation for working alongside Banks, noting, “Our professional relationship makes it easy to portray tension and complexity. Elizabeth is not just a talented actress but also a supportive director and producer. Her generosity during filming was invaluable, especially as I navigated my transition into directing my own film.”
On the dynamic of working with someone who previously directed him, Méndez reflected, “Initially, it felt different to act alongside someone who had been my director, but Elizabeth adapted seamlessly to the role of acting partner, making it a comfortable experience.”
Discussing director Austin Peters, Méndez highlighted his unique vision and understanding of Los Angeles culture that is palpable in the script. “I felt his voice was distinct, setting this film apart in a unique way that drew me in.”
Méndez also hinted at his own directorial debut with a film titled Technoboys, set to release soon on Netflix. “Creating my character based on true events added a layer of intensity to the work. The inspiration from real experiences brought a magical energy to the set,” he added.
