The individual accused of murdering UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson has entered a not guilty plea to charges of murder and terrorism in New York State.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arraigned in court on 11 serious criminal counts, including first-degree murder and committing murder as an act of terrorism.
In addition to state charges, Mangione also faces federal allegations of stalking and murder, which carry the possibility of the death penalty. Prosecutors allege that he shot Thompson in central Manhattan before fleeing the scene. Authorities apprehended him at a Pennsylvania location shortly after the incident.
If convicted on all state charges, Mangione could face a mandatory life sentence without parole. During his Monday court appearance, he was dressed in a maroon sweater and khaki pants. The courtroom was filled with journalists and members of the public, notably a group of young women who expressed their support for Mangione.
Federal prosecutors have charged him with using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death, with both charges making him potentially eligible for the death penalty. Mangione has not yet entered a plea for these federal charges.
Prosecutors have indicated that both the state and federal cases will proceed simultaneously.
