New Zealand’s renowned singer-songwriter Marlon Williams has partnered with local sensation Lorde on his newest track, “Kāhore He Manu E.” This song will be featured on Williams’ anticipated first Māori language album, Te Whare Tīwekaweka, set to release on April 4. The accompanying video is sourced from the documentary Ngā Ao E Rua – Two Worlds, which chronicles the album’s production.
In a statement, Lorde expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with Williams, stating it is “one of my favourite things to do on earth.” She reflected on the creative journey, mentioning, "Over the years, I observed Marlon weave together the threads of Te Whare Tīwekaweka. As his work evolved, I witnessed him deepen his understanding of himself, his whānau, and the world around him. Marlon’s perfectionism ensured that he would examine every detail, crafting intricate waiata that honor the past while incorporating his distinctive humor."
Williams praised Lorde’s contribution, emphasizing that her voice fundamentally shaped the song. He described her vocal characteristics as uniquely suited to the melody and phrasing, noting their shared experiences on tour and how the song serves as a tribute to the complexities of life on the road, filled with the joys and challenges of friendships formed and lost.
In 2021, Lorde released Te Ao Mārama, an EP featuring five re-recorded tracks from Solar Power in the Māori language, a project aimed at highlighting indigenous culture. She welcomed discussions on representation and accountability in the music industry, stating, "Power like mine should be interrogated." Proceeds from that project supported environmental and charitable initiatives.
Earlier this year, Williams unveiled the lead single “Aua Atu Rā” from his upcoming album, building excitement for the full release.
