DUBAI, UAE – In a significant advancement for sustainability and innovation, KEZAD Group and Witthal Gulf Industries LLC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Automechanika Dubai 2024 to establish the UAE’s first lithium battery recycling plant.
This collaboration will create a state-of-the-art battery recycling facility, reinforcing sustainable industrial practices and supporting the UAE’s environmental goals. Scheduled to commence full operations by Q2 2027, the facility will recycle 5,000 tons of battery waste each year, contributing to a reduction of approximately 20,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually while decreasing reliance on energy-intensive mining activities.
This pioneering project aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 targets and its Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, reflecting the nation’s leadership in green industrial practices. The plant will enhance the EV ecosystem by encouraging renewable energy storage, minimizing the carbon footprint of battery manufacturing, and fostering sustainability through advanced carbon capture technologies and material recovery methods.
During a panel discussion at Automechanika Dubai’s Innovation4Mobility feature, a representative from Witthal Gulf Industries LLC stated:
“At Witthal, we envision a sustainable future for human mobility. With over a decade of experience in the battery trade segment, we are committed to identifying opportunities that align with KEZAD’s ambitions for an automotive hub.”
This project is a transformative development for the UAE’s automotive sector, particularly in accelerating the growth of the electric vehicle (EV) market. The establishment of a fully operational lithium battery recycling plant is essential for fostering a robust EV ecosystem within KEZAD and will significantly contribute to regional growth.
“We are prepared for the next phase of growth as a company, focusing on building technologies and ecosystems around the factory, such as carbon capture and value-added manufacturing to support KEZAD’s goals,” the representative added.
Automechanika Dubai, the premier automotive aftermarket trade exhibition in the Middle East, served as the perfect venue for this announcement, highlighting its role as a catalyst for innovative partnerships and advancements in the automotive sector.
The event concluded with participation from 2,228 global exhibitors representing over 62 countries, attracting industry leaders and professionals committed to showcasing innovation and shaping the future of mobility.
