The transformation of Britain’s “ugliest” dog into a Hollywood sensation has taken an unexpected turn, with her owner describing the experience as “surreal.” Peggy now shares the screen with iconic actors in the latest Marvel superhero film, *Deadpool & Wolverine*.
This five-year-old pugese, a mix of pug and Chinese crested, was cast as “Dogpool” after gaining national attention last year when she was crowned the ugliest dog in a prominent contest.
“Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine this would happen,” said Peggy’s owner, Holly Middleton, from East Yorkshire, reflecting on the last 18 months.
“When we submitted her picture to the ugly dog competition, I never anticipated it would lead to this level of recognition,” added Middleton.
Peggy is set to make a special appearance at a cinema in Hull, where she will meet fans at Cineworld, Kingswood, at 10:30 BST.
Despite her newfound fame and a growing fan base, Middleton reported that Peggy remains humble at home, showing no signs of “diva behaviour.” Instead, the typically “reserved and lazy” pugese has gained more confidence thanks to her trainer during filming.
“She’s still just plain old Peg,” Middleton remarked.
The family missed Peggy dearly while she was filming. “It was really strange not having her home. The boys missed her terribly,” stated Middleton. “We had to keep her whereabouts a secret.” She expressed relief to have Peggy back home, saying, “I’m glad she’s back. We missed her.”
Witnessing Peggy’s red carpet debut in New York alongside A-list celebrities was an unforgettable and surreal experience for Middleton. “I loved every moment. Peggy appeared so at ease,” she added, referring to interactions with Ryan Reynolds and other stars.
“They were so gentle and affectionate with her, showing her love and attention. It was delightful to see her enjoying herself.” Middleton emphasized that Peggy remains a cherished family pet first and foremost, prioritizing her comfort at home over future film opportunities.
Despite her newfound fame, Middleton insists that Peggy is still just like any other dog in the village, though she now loves the attention that comes her way. “The public perception of Peggy has significantly shifted for the better,” she noted. Previously, people often whispered about her looks, but now compliments abound.
Middleton concluded, “The way people see Peggy has changed immensely, and it’s heartwarming to witness.”
