Aug. 21, 2024: Renowned Guyanese musician David (Dave) Anthony Martins was cremated on Tuesday following a private funeral service held at the Kaashi Dhaam Crematorium in Ruimzeight, West Coast Demerara. A heartfelt tribute was paid to Martins by his wife Annette Arjoon and his children, Alex and Victoria Arjoon, who remembered him as a devoted husband and father.
In her emotional speech, Annette reflected on their 15-year relationship, stating, “I was truly blessed to have him in my life. Those years were filled with joy, happiness, and love, and today, he is in a good place, surrounded by those who love him dearly.”
Both Alex and Victoria shared poignant memories of their father, emphasizing his warmth and humor. “His incredible wits and love for my mom are memories I will cherish forever,” Victoria expressed at the ceremony.
Ret’d Major General Joseph Singh, a close friend of Martins, commended him for his contributions to the country through his extensive musical repertoire of over 300 songs. Singh remarked that Martins had a unique ability to unite people in a spirit of nationalism and cultural pride.
Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Charles Ramson Jnr. highlighted the difficulty of saying goodbye to such a remarkable figure. “He will never be forgotten, and his legacy must live on through us,” the minister stated.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali honored Martins’ legacy, describing him as an ‘Icon of Caribbean Identity.’ The President noted that Martins’ music and dedication to cultural development would resonate with future generations.
Martins, famous for his song ‘Not a Blade of Grass,’ passed away on August 18th at the age of 90. The cause of death has not been disclosed. A public memorial service will be organized later, as announced by his family.
