An asteroid measuring up to 100 meters in width has a 1-in-83 chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. This level of risk has prompted the activation of global planetary defense response protocols for the first time in history.
“This is a historic moment,” stated a representative from the European Space Agency (ESA).
The asteroid, designated as 2024 YR4, was initially detected on December 27, 2024, by an automated telescope.
