PHUKET: Recovery efforts have begun in Muang district following a devastating landslide that claimed the lives of 13 individuals. All missing victims have been located, prompting local authorities to transition from search operations to rehabilitation.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat announced on Saturday that the search for the last three missing victims concluded successfully, with a total death toll of 13 confirmed. The victims included workers and tourists from outside the region.
Three sub-districts—Chalong, Karon, and Rawai—were significantly impacted by the landslide, affecting 209 families across nine villages. In addition to the deceased, 19 others sustained injuries, with three individuals remaining hospitalized as of Sunday.
Among the deceased, nine were identified as Myanmar nationals—comprising four men and five women—while the remaining four included a Russian couple and two Thai women from Surat Thani and Sakon Nakhon provinces.
Sophon Thongsai, chief of Phuket’s disaster prevention and mitigation office, stated that restoration efforts for public utilities and homes commenced on Sunday to facilitate the swift return of evacuees.
Crews are working diligently to restore road access and clear toppled power lines by Sunday evening.
Ongoing Risks
In addition, officials are mobilizing support through donations of food, water, clothing, and cash to assist those affected. While cash donations are not emphasized, on-the-ground items that can be immediately used by victims are highly encouraged.
Wat Kata remains operational as a temporary shelter for 20 individuals who lost their homes in the landslide.
Despite repair activities, authorities are bracing for potential further landslides due to ongoing rainfall in the area, according to Mr. Sophon.
In response to the disaster, the Third Fleet was ordered to provide meals for both victims and rescue personnel starting Saturday, as confirmed by VAdm Suchart Thampitakwet, the fleet commander.
Police officials, led by Pol Col Khundet na Nongkhai of Karon Police Station, have identified 12 of the deceased, with the remaining victim believed to be a Myanmar national. Investigations are ongoing to determine the landslide’s cause following heavy rains that began late Thursday night, resulting in the catastrophic event around 5 a.m. on Friday.
