Lando Norris has expressed concerns regarding a controversial ride-height device on the Red Bull car. This device has led to modifications in the RB20 model, which may have given Max Verstappen an edge in their ongoing championship battle. Red Bull confirmed this week that they have reached an agreement with the FIA to adjust the car following discussions about the device’s implications.
Rival teams raised alarms that the device could allow Red Bull to modify its ride height during ‘parc ferme’ conditions—an action that would infringe upon the rules of the sport. However, Red Bull has stated that the device cannot be utilized when the car is in its complete form.
Before Red Bull’s confirmation, the FIA noted that there were no indications of any team employing such technology, emphasizing that using a device to gain a competitive advantage would violate regulations. Norris commented on the implications of the device, stating, “If it has been helping them, if they have been utilizing it in a way people think they have, maybe it will shift in our direction.”
The McLaren driver, who is trailing Verstappen by 52 points as the season enters its concluding stages, also expressed skepticism about the device being the sole reason for Red Bull’s success. He noted, “I don’t think it will change anything in the scheme of things… maybe at certain qualifying sessions, when it has been split by hundredths or thousandths, you might say, ‘OK, maybe this has helped in this direction or that direction.’”
Norris further highlighted the FIA’s proactive measures to maintain fair play, referencing a previous request for McLaren to adjust a ‘mini-DRS’ rear wing device. He acknowledged the essential balance between innovation and adherence to regulations within Formula 1.
Amid these developments, both Verstappen and teammate Sergio Perez have downplayed the device’s impact, reaffirming that it would not benefit the team once the car was assembled. A Red Bull spokesperson reiterated that while the device exists, it was deemed ineffective for performance enhancement during races.
As the title race heats up, Norris remarked on his growing confidence ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin, suggesting that McLaren’s form is equipped for a stronger challenge than displayed in previous races. Looking ahead, he noted, “We’re confident we can be towards the top.”
Verstappen remains cautiously optimistic, hoping that upcoming car upgrades can help Red Bull regain their competitive advantage without drastically altering the current pecking order. The anticipation surrounding this Sprint weekend has brought added excitement to the closing stages of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
