Nigerians are expressing outrage following the emergence of a disturbing video featuring a teacher at a school in Ikorodu, Lagos State, physically assaulting a three-year-old pupil for not adhering to writing instructions. The incident involved Stella Nwadigo at Christ-Mitots International School and has sparked a national outcry.
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency confirmed the teacher’s arrest, with calls from across the nation for a thorough investigation into the school. The Lagos State Ministry of Education has indicated that the matter is being escalated to relevant departments for further inquiry.
A viral video captured Nwadigo mistreating the young pupil during a lesson, in which she was heard chastising and slapping him repeatedly for not writing the number six correctly. This footage has fueled public condemnation, with many demanding accountability and legal action against the teacher.
Prominent social commentator VeryDarkMan has threatened to organize a protest at the school if immediate answers from the management are not provided regarding the teacher’s behavior towards the child. The commentator stated that action will be taken if the situation does not improve, emphasizing the need for awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.
In a recent discussion, a representative from Advocates for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network disclosed that the child has been hospitalized due to the assault. The representative characterized the incident as a severe case of child cruelty, highlighting the psychological and physical impacts on the child.
The agency also pointed out the necessity for timely medical and psychological intervention for the affected child and called for a comprehensive investigation to reveal if other students might have been subjected to similar treatment.
In response to the public outcry, the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has initiated an investigation into the matter. It confirmed that the teacher is currently in police custody and a thorough inquiry is underway to ensure appropriate legal measures are taken.
The agency maintains that educational institutions must be safe havens for children and is dedicated to enforcing strict regulations against abuse while partnering with community stakeholders to instill a zero-tolerance policy towards violence in schools.
