Katy Perry Shines at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Accepts Video Vanguard Honor
Katy Perry delivered an unforgettable performance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards held at Long Island’s UBS Arena, where she treated fans to a spectacular 10-song medley and was honored with the prestigious Video Vanguard trophy. The pop icon showcased her biggest hits, including “Dark Horse” and “E.T.,” while floating high above the stage in a dazzling display.
In a highlight of the evening, rapper Doechii made a surprise appearance to perform live with Perry, debuting her new single, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” which creatively samples Crystal Waters’ classic “Gypsy Woman.” Perry did not hold back, captivating the crowd with fan favorites “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream,” accompanied by dancers clad in futuristic silver costumes.
The show-stopping moment continued as Perry revisited her breakout hit “I Kissed a Girl,” before donning eye-catching inflatable metallic butterfly wings for an emotional rendition of “Firework.” She concluded the set with “Lifetimes,” the second single from her eagerly awaited album, 143.
Perry’s partner introduced her at the event, presenting the coveted Video Vanguard Moon Person. In her heartfelt acceptance speech, she humorously remarked, “I did this all on the first day of my period,” expressing gratitude to MTV for embracing her uniqueness over the years. She also acknowledged the unwavering support of the LGBTQ+ community as well as her family.
Katy Perry joins an esteemed list of Video Vanguard recipients, including recent winners like Shakira, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé. Making her MTV VMAs debut in 2009, Perry quickly rose to fame after earning multiple awards, including her first Moon Person trophies in 2011 for her anthem “Firework” and her collaboration with Kanye West on “E.T.”
After a brief hiatus, Perry returned to the music scene in July with the empowering single “Woman’s World,” announcing her upcoming album 143, set for release on September 20. The album will mark her first since Smile was released in 2020, with “Lifetimes” serving as a promising lead-up.
