Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has publicly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, calling them “harmful to the unity of the country.” This declaration was made when his Deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, represented him at the 2025 celebration at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Gwarzo’s Chief Press Secretary noted the governor’s stance, emphasizing that “This tax reform bill does not address our economic challenges. Kano State firmly opposes policies that detrimentally impact our citizens’ welfare.”
Gwarzo praised Kano residents for their resilience in the face of economic difficulties, labeling the proposed tax reform as “misguided, ill-timed, and detrimental to national unity.” He stated, “Nigerians, particularly in the North, are struggling with hyperinflation and extreme insecurity. The Presidency should focus on combating poverty and hunger in the northern regions.”
Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s achievements in sectors such as healthcare, education, road construction, and overseas scholarship programs. He reiterated his rightful position as the elected governor of Kano State, as confirmed by the Supreme Court ruling in January 2024.
In a related development, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), urged President Tinubu to prioritize public accountability before implementing tax reforms. During his New Year address, he warned that any additional hardships from government policies would be intolerable.
He stated, “My New Year wish is for an improved quality of life for Nigerians. We cannot afford further hardship; the government must act to alleviate the effects.” He stressed the need for a robust economy to provide better education and healthcare.
Azinge added, “Nigeria must address its challenges internally, instilling confidence in the youth to remain in the country and pursue their careers.” He emphasized the necessity of accountability in the effective use of taxpayer funds, asserting that meaningful tax reform must demonstrate responsible spending of public money.
On legal disputes regarding his ascension as Asagba, Azinge confirmed his readiness to confront former contenders in court, stating, “Asaba is a democratic and inclusive community. It’s understandable for anyone to pursue legal options after a consensus decision has been reached.” He reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the issue thoroughly, insisting the challenges raised by opponents are unfounded.
As a reminder, Azinge was among ten individuals honored with the Staff of Office by the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on October 5, 2024.
