The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the nation’s oldest Black sorority, has launched a political action committee (PAC) to support federal candidates financially. This move is a significant step that enhances its role in the political landscape.
Notably, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, an alumna of the sorority, has made these organizations a key focus of her campaign. The “Divine Nine,” which includes this sorority, collectively boasts over 2.5 million active members, illustrating its considerable influence in the upcoming election. Harris addressed the Alpha Kappa Alpha’s annual convention in Houston earlier this month.
The creation of the PAC, alongside existing efforts for voter registration and mobilization, signals a rising enthusiasm for Harris among Black voters, whose support played a pivotal role in securing her candidacy after President Biden’s withdrawal.
Following Biden’s endorsement of Harris, the Win With Black Women PAC rapidly raised over $1.5 million during a donation drive, inspiring similar fundraising initiatives that collectively brought in tens of millions.
Recent polling data indicates Harris holds a narrow lead over former President Trump, emphasizing her appeal, particularly among Black women and a broader demographic of voters of color. This advantage is anticipated to invigorate Democratic prospects in key battleground states, such as Georgia and North Carolina, come November.
As the political landscape evolves, the impact of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s new PAC and Harris’s ongoing campaign strategies will be closely monitored by analysts and voters alike.
