At a high-energy rally in Philadelphia, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris introduced her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. She highlighted his extensive background, often referring to him as “Coach Walz” due to his successful career as a high school football coach.
“In 91 days,” Harris proclaimed, “the nation will know Coach Walz by another name: vice president of the United States.”
The current vice president emphasized Walz’s service as a National Guardsman and educator, along with his progressive achievements as Minnesota’s governor, which include significant voting rights initiatives and gun safety legislation. The duo focused their campaign message on the theme of “freedom” and a vision for the “future,” contrasting sharply with the previous administration under Donald Trump.
In response, Republican leaders criticized Walz, labeling him a “radical” liberal. During his speech, an enthusiastic Walz took aim at Trump, asserting that violent crime rose during Trump’s presidency and quipping, “That’s not even counting the crimes he committed!”
Harris and Walz were introduced by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who, despite not being selected as a running mate, delivered a strong endorsement for the Democratic ticket.
Harris reciprocated the support, stating, “Together with Josh Shapiro, we will win Pennsylvania.”
