PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron officially opened the Paralympic Games on Wednesday evening, celebrating the occasion with a spectacular ceremony filled with joyous volunteers and enthusiastic spectators amidst a delightful summer backdrop.
In a historic move, this event marked the first ever Paralympics kick-off held outside of a stadium, taking place on the iconic Champs Elysees and the Place de la Concorde.
Despite heightened security, with approximately 15,000 law enforcement personnel present, the atmosphere remained light and festive as the sun set over Paris.
During his opening speech, Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet welcomed competitors by saying, “Dear athletes, welcome to the country of love and revolution. Tonight, the most beautiful revolution begins — the Paralympic revolution.” He emphasized, “It’s a sweet revolution that will change all of us deeply.”
The live performance commenced at the foot of the obelisk in Place de la Concorde, featuring Canadian musician Chilly Gonzales on piano.
Artists with disabilities led a thrilling countdown, followed by French artist Christine and the Queens, who delivered an electrifying rendition of Edith Piaf’s ‘Je ne regrette rien‘.
This extraordinary event, titled “Paradox, from discord to concord,” was choreographed by Swedish artist Alexander Ekman and showcased over 500 performers, concluding before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 50,000 attendees.
The parade of athletes, representing 168 delegations, kicked off with a festive spirit along the Champs Elysees, with volunteers celebrating and dancing joyfully.
As the French contingent reached the central square, Yann Tiersen’s theme from Amelie resonated, prompting the crowd to chant ‘Allez Les Bleus’ against the stunning backdrop of the Eiffel Tower.
In contrast to last month’s rainy Olympics opening ceremony, which occurred along the Seine River without any security issues, this event delivered a sense of unity and excitement, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
