John Cale has officially announced the highly anticipated reissues of his influential solo albums, with a new rendition of 1972’s The Academy in Peril and a deluxe version of 1973’s Paris 1919 set to release on November 15. The remastered editions, expertly handled by seasoned audio engineer Heba Kadry, will be available in multiple formats, including vinyl, CD, and digital streaming.
“Revisiting work from the past is a double-edged sword for me,” Cale remarked about the reissues. “It’s bound to happen when you’ve been making music for 60 years or so.” He further emphasized the unique collaboration with Domino, stating:
“Their commitment to authenticity is commendable. This is not just a reissue for the sake of an anniversary; it’s about uncovering hidden gems and celebrating what made these albums extraordinary. After hearing the test pressings, I realized the new mastering significantly transformed how these works are experienced, bringing moments of clarity and nostalgia that made these sessions special.”
These albums were recorded shortly after Cale’s move from New York to Los Angeles, following his departure from the iconic Velvet Underground. Notably, The Academy in Peril was produced at an astounding cost of $120,000 and featured the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, while Paris 1919 showcased Little Feat and bassist Wilton Felder, recorded at Sunwest Studios in Hollywood.
The remastered edition of The Academy in Peril will include a bonus track titled “Temper,” while the deluxe edition of Paris 1919 presents previously unreleased tape audio, a unique drone mix of “Hanky Panky Nohow,” a brand new track called “Fever Dream 2024: You’re a Ghost,” and additional outtakes. This deluxe edition also features insightful liner notes.
At 82 years old, John Cale remains an active force in the music industry, with his latest studio album, Poptical Illusion, released in June. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the remastered classics and celebrate a legendary career in music.
