Joe Root has firmly stated that his opportunity to become England’s next one-day international captain is behind him, emphasizing that he is focused on the upcoming Test series against India and Australia.
With Jos Buttler stepping down from the limited-overs captaincy following a disappointing campaign in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, England is now in search of a new leader for their white-ball team. Root, who captained the Test side from 2017 to 2022, spoke at the launch of a new indoor padel court in Sheffield, expressing enthusiasm for the five-match Test series against India starting June 20, as well as the Ashes series in Australia beginning November 21. Root aims to secure a Test series win in Australia after previous losses in 2013/14, 2017/18, and 2021/22.
When asked about the white-ball captaincy, Root stated, “I don’t think so. I think that ship’s sailed. I’ve done my time as a captain in England. I’m sure whoever gets the opportunity will be proud and do a brilliant job.” He reflected on the recent Champions Trophy, calling it disappointing and noted the potential within the team to move forward and regain their competitive edge reminiscent of their success from 2015 to 2019, including winning the World Cup in 2019.
Looking ahead, the England white-ball team will return to action on May 29 against the West Indies for a three-match ODI series, complemented by a series of T20 internationals. Meanwhile, the Test squad will commence their summer campaign with a four-day fixture against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge beginning May 22, leading into the crucial series against India and Australia.
Root expressed confidence in the team’s development and potential success, stating, “These are the years you play for. Two of the biggest teams, two of the biggest series you can play in as an England player. It’s something the team is relishing.” He acknowledged the importance of consistent performance against India, emphasizing the need for match-winning efforts throughout the lengthy series.
As England prepares for these significant challenges, Root remains motivated, stating, “As long as you’ve got that mentality of finding ways of helping yourself and the team move forward, it can only benefit not just yourself but the guys around you too.”
