ECNETNews, February 3, 2025: Montserrat’s Premier Reuben Meade has addressed concerns about land ownership in the British Caribbean territory following the notable visit of Jeff Bezos, who was recently seen on the island aboard his luxury superyacht, Koru.
During a United Alliance town hall meeting in Salem on January 10, community members raised questions about Bezos’ presence on the island and the possibility of him considering land purchases or investments.
In response, Premier Meade clarified that foreign nationals cannot acquire property in Montserrat without government approval. “He cannot buy property in Montserrat unless the government grants an alien land holding license. So, we will know when business is being done,” Meade asserted.
He further emphasized the necessity for any foreign investor to register a business or obtain a license, ensuring all transactions are transparent. “They can’t do anything unless they register a business or seek a license to do business. So, we will know what is happening when the time is right.”
Bezos’ Caribbean Tour Sparks Speculation
Bezos arrived in Montserrat on January 6 aboard Koru, a 417-foot, three-masted sailing yacht built by Oceanco at an estimated cost of $500 million. The Amazon founder has also been visiting various Caribbean destinations, stirring interest and speculation.
His visit elicited mixed reactions among Montserratians, with many residents sharing photos and videos of his yacht on social media. Some viewed his presence as a potential tourism boost, with comments highlighting how visitors could learn about the island’s beauty. Others speculated about possible investments, with remarks regarding potential interest in purchasing property or investing in local projects. Some residents suggested that Bezos could even contribute to the island’s development initiatives.
However, Premier Meade dismissed ongoing speculation by reaffirming that Bezos was simply enjoying a tourist experience. “We’re not going to pry into a person’s business. He comes here as a tourist. He spends money in Montserrat. We appreciate the economic contribution he makes to our community.”
Montserrat, a picturesque mountainous island in the Caribbean and part of the Lesser Antilles, has much to offer visitors, from black-sand beaches to coral reefs and scenic cliffs. Despite past challenges, including volcanic activity in the 1990s, its northern region remains largely unaffected, making it a desirable destination for tourism.
