ECNETNews, New York, NY, August 16, 2024: “Jamaica’s incredible acting talent stands as one of the island’s most significant untapped creative resources. The moment has come to unleash this potential, and I am prepared for it—and for the world.” These powerful words were shared by Christopher ‘Johnny’ Daley, an award-winning Jamaican actor, comedian, and former child star, as he embarks on a transformative stage in his successful career.
Daley, renowned for his iconic portrayal of ‘Johnny’ in the beloved Jamaican television series Lime Tree Lane, is set to take the international stage with multiple performances, including a prominent role in the highly anticipated series Get Millie Black, co-produced by HBO and the UK’s Channel 4.
He will headline The Kings of Jamaican Comedy event in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on Sunday, August 25th, coinciding with Boston’s Carnival Weekend, held at Kay’s Oasis located at 1125 Blue Hill Avenue, Boston, MA 02124.
Daley emphasized Jamaica’s global cultural influence in music, athletics, fashion, and beauty, stating that Jamaican actors are still awaiting their rightful recognition. “We’ve given the world the Marleys, Shaggys, and Sean Pauls, as well as Usain Bolts, Asafa Powells, and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryces. But in film, theater, and television, our influence remains underappreciated,” he remarked. With the rising interest in Jamaican narratives told by local actors, Daley is enthusiastic about being part of this renaissance.
His upcoming role in Get Millie Black, a gripping crime drama, features Daley as Detective Lance Stennet, whose tense dynamic with Jamaican-born detective Millie Black adds depth to the storyline. Daley described Stennet as “ambitious, tenacious, and serious about policing,” adding that this role enables him to delve into the complexities of their working relationship.
In addition to his work on Get Millie Black, Daley has a busy schedule filled with live performances. Following his Boston appearance, he will take the stage at the Premier Restaurant and Lounge in Lithonia, Georgia, on October 13 for the Laugh A Ton event and will also perform at the annual Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival in South Florida on November 10. Back in Jamaica, he is set to appear at the Grace Food Festival in Hope Gardens on August 24 and hosts the popular Johnny Live Comedy Bar at his venue, Johnny’s Place, every Tuesday night.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Daley recalls how his early mischief in primary school led him to join the drama club, which ultimately earned him a lead role in his first play and a summer scholarship to The Jamaica School of Drama. It was here he met television writer Melita Samuels, who cast him in Lime Tree Lane, catapulting him to fame.
Now, decades later, Daley has seamlessly transitioned from child star to acclaimed actor, with nearly forty major stage productions and screen appearances in films like One Love and Kingston Paradise. His accomplishments have garnered him accolades, including the International Theatre Institute (Jamaica) Actor Boy Award for Best Actor.
Despite a demanding schedule, Daley prioritizes quality time with his three children. With the growing interest in Jamaican-themed projects worldwide, he looks forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. “A movement is unfolding, and Jamaican actors are finally starting to gain recognition,” he stated. “While Jamaica will always be home, I’m ready to pursue work opportunities wherever they may arise.” He concludes, “We’ve been anticipating this moment for a long time, and I’m determined to make the most of it.”
