The Israeli military has confirmed that its air force is conducting strikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon following the detection of attempts to launch missiles and rockets into Israeli territory. In a statement, an IDF spokesman emphasized that these actions are a response to immediate threats to national security.
Israel has issued warnings to civilians in Lebanon, advising them to evacuate areas where Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group, is known to operate. This warning comes amid escalating tensions.
In retaliation, Hezbollah announced a significant drone assault on Israel, which they attribute to the recent killing of their senior military leader last month. Early on Sunday, sirens were activated across northern Israel as the threat of incoming rockets materialized.
The IDF reported that Hezbollah had launched over 150 projectiles from Lebanon targeting Israel. Israeli Air Force jets are actively engaged, striking multiple locations in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah claimed to have fired more than 320 Katyusha rockets, hitting at least 11 Israeli military bases and installations.
In response to the escalating situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an urgent meeting with his security cabinet. The Prime Minister and Defence Minister are reportedly managing the crisis from an IDF military facility in Tel Aviv.
Hezbollah characterized their offensive actions as retaliation for what they describe as “brutal Zionist aggression,” following the death of Fuad Shukr, a high-ranking commander killed during an Israeli airstrike in Beirut last July. The ongoing conflict has intensified since the war erupted last October between Israel and Hamas, with both groups receiving backing from Iran.
