Bangkok’s moonshine methanol crisis has escalated, with two additional fatalities bringing the death toll to six. Investigators are expanding their search for those responsible for producing and distributing this deadly concoction beyond the northern suburbs of the city.
According to Dr. Pairoj Surattanawanich, deputy director-general of the Department of Medical Services, the latest confirmed deaths occurred on Tuesday due to methanol intoxication. One victim succumbed in a hospital after being resuscitated, while the other passed away at home.
As of now, 22 individuals who consumed the tainted alcohol at street liquor stalls remain hospitalized, suffering from symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty breathing, impaired vision, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting.
Two new patients were admitted to Nopparat Rajathanee Hospital, complaining of exhaustion and respiratory issues. These individuals stated they consumed moonshine from different stalls not previously linked to the initial cases, prompting further investigations.
Authorities are now examining five newly identified liquor stalls located in Lat Krabang and Khannayao districts of Bangkok, as well as in Lam Luk Ka district of Pathum Thani.
Pol Maj Gen Kiatikul Sonthinen, the commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 3 overseeing northern Bangkok, reported that a 49-year-old woman suspected of supplying the beverage to the now-closed stalls has been charged with illegal liquor production and recklessness leading to death and serious injury.
The latest reports reveal that two of the affected individuals are currently reliant on respirators, while 17 others require kidney dialysis. The closed stalls are located across various districts including Khannayao, Khlong Sam Wa, Lat Krabang, Min Buri, Nong Chok, and Prawet.
Officials have confirmed that samples from these stalls demonstrated dangerously high levels of methanol. Authorities are urging consumers to avoid purchasing illegal alcohol to safeguard their health and safety.
